” This artist engraves coins in a hobo nickel style!
The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form that involves the creative modification of small-denomination coins with miniature bas reliefs in a result.
“Hobo nickel” carvings went from an itinerant folk art at the beginning. Artists became more and more creative over the years. Here are fantastic works from Roman Booteen, a Russian coin carving artist.
His extraordinary project, Gold Bug, was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s story, The Gold Bug. It features a central beetle motif with a tailored mechanism that allows its wings to open and close, revealing and concealing its gold body.
Carved from two Morgan dollar coins from 1921 and a five dollar gold coin from 2015, the mechanism works by pushing a small button on the coin’s top edge. There’s the Latin sign on the coin. It’s framed with florals, ribbons, and skulls and says: “The most expensive should be something that was sought longer and intensively than others.”
